October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer risks, the value of screening and early detection, and treatment options available to women and men who are diagnosed with one of the many forms of breast cancer. More than 249,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with invasive breast cancer every year.
We’ve come a long way from the early days, when the word “breast” was not uttered in polite company. Throughout October survivor celebrations and awareness events are being held around the country and around the world. One of my very first speakers, Fern Carness, was a trailblazer in breast cancer survivorship and champion for women’s health. In her honor, I recognize all of our outstanding cancer survivor speakers, and the good work they do in the world to inspire and encourage those who follow them.
