"Shannon Miller exceeded our expectations in terms of her message for the public, community, students, and teachers. Shannon was very flexible and willing to answer questions that the public had regarding being an Olympic gold medalist and the struggles and opportunities that it brought. Our staff at the Health Department were blown away by Shannon’s kindness, willingness to be flexible, and ability to connect with our residents on a common basis. We would definitely recommend Shannon to anyone looking to hold an important speaking event that will not only motivate people but will resonate with them for years to come. Thank you, Barbara, for all of your hard work in making this event so successful! I really appreciate it!" -- Tyler J. Shaw, Environmental Health Director, Allegany Department of Health, Belmont, NY
Olympic Medalist, Ovarian Cancer Survivor Speaker - The Gold Medal Mindset
Olympic Medalist and Ovarian Cancer Survivor, Shannon Miller, speaks about applying the Gold Medal Mindset in life and surviving ovarian cancer.
She shares generously so that her listeners can apply the Gold Medal Mindset to their own motivation, goal-setting, teamwork, health, illness, and commitment to excellence in both sports and business. For example, she explores what most of us leave out when we set goals and describes how she learned to fill it in.
The Gold Medal Mindset That Produced an Olympic Medalist
Shannon remains the most decorated Olympic gymnast in United States history.
When she started, she may not have been the most talented, flexible – or even the strongest – athlete.
But Shannon Miller developed and utilized the Gold Medal Mindset to become The Most Decorated Olympic Gymnast in United States history.
Invoking that Gold Medal Mindset, she won seven Olympic medals. (2 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze).
She is the only female athlete to be inducted into the US Olympic Hall of Fame – Twice! (Individual (2006) and Team (2008))
Shannon won an astounding 59 International and 49 National competition medals. Over half of these were gold.
She is the first US gymnast to win two World All-Around Titles.
Her tally of five medals (two silver, three bronze) at the 1992 Olympics was the most medals won by a US athlete in any sport.
At the ’96 Games, she led the “Magnificent Seven” to the US Women’s first-ever Team Gold. And in those same games, for the first time for any American gymnast, she captured Gold on the Balance Beam.
After retiring from Olympic competition, Shannon received her undergraduate degrees in marketing and entrepreneurship from the University of Houston and her law degree from Boston College.
But then she also began experiencing weight gain and low self-esteem. And it was in facing those challenges that are so common to most of us that this Olympian and now mother of two found that she could draw on her Gold Medal Mindset to help her find her way back to a healthy moderation – the principles she had followed in training such as getting back up after a fall, the importance of doing the work and a little bit more, and making the basic decision that she would win, conquer the challenge.
She remains a part of the gymnastics and Olympic communities as an analyst and commentator.
Applying the Gold Medal Mindset in Life – and Surviving Ovarian Cancer
In 2010, Shannon launched her own company, which is devoted to helping women make their health a priority.
In January of the next year, however, Shannon was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer. She had a tumor the size of a baseball removed successfully and followed up with an aggressive chemotherapy regimen.
She has remained open and public about her diagnosis and treatment, and she continues to empower women to make their health a priority.
Cancer-free, Shannon continues to be a strong advocate for early detection, awareness, research, and survivorship.
She travels the country as a highly sought-after motivational speaker on topics ranging from The Gold Medal Mindset to cancer and survivorship to the importance of health and fitness.
Passionate about Sharing With Others
Shannon’s passion is to describe to others what she developed in the Gold Medal Mindset.
More important, she shows others how that framework can encourage and empower them to break through and overcome their own personal challenges. That powerful mindset, she asserts, is one that we can all develop and draw on.
Shannon is now a mother of two, a cancer survivor, an author and a sports analyst but she will forever be remembered for her focus, determination, and her big, white hair scrunchie!
