Hindsight?

Dec. 19, 2017, Vol.15, Issue 10

There’s a story behind the spectacular sunset pictured above that reminds me that behind a moment’s disappointment, unexpected and wonderful things may be unfolding brilliantly.

It was Tuesday, Dec. 12, and my husband and I had been at the beach — Cannon Beach, Oregon – since Sunday to celebrate our December birthdays. The weather had been sunny and in the 50’s — a welcome change from normal rainy Oregon December. This photo was taken our third (and final) night.

On our first night, Sunday, we had witnessed a red ball sink into the ocean and leave the entire sky in streaks of red and orange. We were mesmerized. Wow! Now, I need to let you know that it is quite remarkable for us to see a sunset — or a sunrise, for that matter — at all, because we live among tall fir trees, and in order to see a sunrise or sunset, we have to leave our cul de sac and head for a nearby park. So Sunday’s glowing red sunset was a treat.

Monday night was equally rewarding with a streaks of color low in the sky as the golden ball lowered beyond the horizon. I thought, oh boy, capturing the scene on my iPhone, I have a new screen saver shot for my computer.

By the third night, we started out a little earlier and walked down to the beach with great expectations, heading south toward Haystack Rock. There were lots of clouds in the sky but there was no red ball sinking into the water, and just some rather weak splashes of color on the horizon — I didn’t take any pictures. We decided to walk a little further to the other side of Haystack Rock where there are a couple of sidekick stacks, and where waves crash on lots of large rocks. I took a couple of photos there (Photo at right) and turned around to head back.

Turning Around

We had our new beagle, Bindy with us, and this trip was her first time at the ocean, so her nose was going full tilt, checking out all the goodies she encountered on the sand. Jim had her and she was in her usual exploratory mode at the end of the leash, so I had ended up walking ahead of them. I turned around — toward the ocean — to check on them, and much to my surprise, the sky was ablaze in pinks and lavender and all of it was reflecting in the water — as you can see in the picture at the top.

Of course, I whipped out my iPhone and started snapping, as did everyone else on the beach. I was awestruck, it was so spectacular, and I was so aware that it had developed while my back was turned. The irony was very plain to me. Wow! Thank you, Mother Nature.

As soul-satisfying as that sunset was, and continues to feed me as the screen-saver on my computer, a little laughter is also balm for my soul during this busy holiday season. This short video about Black Friday shopping from our speaker, Karen Mills, had me laughing out loud. EnJOY!

This holiday season, I wish you all the people and experiences that bring joy and peace to you and the people in your life. May peace prevail in our hearts and throughout the Universe – for your well being and those you love.

Yours truly,
Barbara
